On February 19, 2002, WLF filed a brief in the U.S. Supreme Court, urging the Court to uphold the power of police officers to question and search bus passengers who voluntarily consent to be searched. On June 17, 2002, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the power of police officers to question and search bus passengers who voluntarily consent to be searched. The decision was a victory for WLF, which filed a brief in the case in support of law enforcement authorities. In this case, two bus passengers who consented to be searched were found to be carrying nearly a kilogram of cocaine. The Court agreed with WLF that, particularly in this age of terrorism, the continued safety of public transportation requires that police be permitted to employ a broad array of law enforcement techniques, including consensual searches.
