On August 31, 2001, WLF filed a brief in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, urging the court to allow a damage suit to continue against plaintiffs’ attorneys who are alleged to have abused the legal process in connection with their handling of asbestos liability cases. WLF asserted that the complaint filed against the defendants (three prominent law firms and six of their attorneys) amounts to an allegation that they have engaged in a massive conspiracy to undermine the American judicial system. On December 11, the court granted WLF a partial victory; although it dismissed some of the legal theories raised by the plaintiff, it allowed the case to go forward on two grounds, including a claim of tortious interference with the plaintiff’s business activities.
